This time it’s Microsoft’s turn to lose their cloud: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14851455

Your files on the move with your iPhone

The iPhone supports VPN connections, allowing you to connect to your Igaware server remotely, and it also supports a neat little app called NetPortal (also available on the iPad called FileBrowser). These apps allow you to access your files on your server, open them, save them to your iphone of email them.

Creating a VPN connection is easy on the iPhone:

Go to Settings => General => Network => VPN

Configure a PPTP connection:

Once configured you simply launch the VPN connection in Setttings => VPN and then launch NetPortal.

So if you want to access your files anywhere, the iPhone and Igaware make a great combination. You can also achieve this with other smart phones.

More cloud woes

Another Amazon cloud-services outage occurred on Sunday, August 7th in a Dublin, Ireland data center. This one occurred due to a lightning strike that hit a transformer near the Dublin data center. It led to an explosion and fire that knocked out all utility services thereby leading to a total data center outage. Amazon had its only European data center located there.

Struck in the cloud?

When it’s cloudy, it’s often during a thunderstorm. And if your mission critical applications and data are in the cloud, a lightening strike can take your business down for hours, as happened recently: http://www.channelweb.co.uk/crn-uk/news/2100075/bpos-outage-microsoft.

While some of our customers have their Igaware Servers hosted, in the main, having your data and applications under your roof is safer, and more reliable.

Remember, common sense trumps industry hype, everytime.

Email & Web Filtering Appliance – 70 user site install

If your business relies on Internet connectivity, you need to ensure that connection is secure, and always up!

Yesterday, I helped a new reseller install an Igaware Email & Web Filtering Appliance, at a company with 70 users. And it had to be done without any business disruption.

The installation was very straight forward:

The Email & Web Filtering Appliance was installed in what is called ‘One-handed Mode’, where it is given an IP address on the existing LAN, and given Internet access through the existing Internet gateway. The benefit of one-handed mode is that there’s no disruption to Internet connectivity.

Once the Email & Web Filtering Appliance was visible on the LAN, the Email & Web Filtering Appliance was configured to relay outgoing email for multiple domains, and to forward incoming email to the existing SBS 2008 server.

Next, a scan of the LAN was run from the Email & Web Filtering Appliance, creating a list of all LAN machines to which Internet Access policies were applied. Prior to this, Internet access for machines was completely unrestricted!

To allow user names to appear in Web usage reports the Igaware was joined to the Active Directory Server, and a policy created on the 2008 Server to update Internet Explorer with the Igaware Email & Web Filtering Appliance as the web proxy, thus enabling single sign-on.

Finally, it was time to start sending all Internet and Email traffic through the Email & Web Filtering Appliance. This was done by updating the DHCP Server on the SBS server to set the Igaware as the default gateway, and setting Igaware as the outgoing SMTP server.

On the existing router, incoming email, on port 25, was forwarded to the Igaware Email & Web Filtering Appliance, along with a couple of other ports to allow remote management and monitoring.

Job done. Network secured and no disruption.

The plan is to install the Email & Web Filtering Appliance configured as a full UTM Appliance, replacing the existing firewall/router, but at a time when Internet can be brought down for 20 minutes. This will be even more secure, as then nothing on the LAN can bypass the Igaware to get onto the Internet.

PPTP VPN

I’m sick of explaining the limitations of PPTP VPN connections.

So, here is a quick explaination of the problems:

PPTP has become a very popular VPN option because many Operating Systems have a PPTP client built in, including all versions of Windows since Windows 95 OSR2.

The PPTP VPN protocol can not track multiple outgoing PPTP connections on one public IP address, unless, you have a PPTP aware router. Note: the Igaware box is PPTP aware.

This means that you can only have one concurrent PPTP connection per public IP address. Only one internal machine may connect to a PPTP server on the Internet. For example, if you are currently connected to server ‘A’ with PPTP you can’t connect to server ‘B’ at the same time. Well, actually, you may be able to connect to server ‘B’, but your PPTP connections will be erratic, with drop outs and lost packets.

If you are using the Igaware server to route outgoing traffic, then, this limitation with PPTP connections is removed, as the Igaware server can track PPTP traffic.
